Supervised ministry is the pastoral formation component of the MDIV and MAPS degree programs that provides students with an opportunity to put theology into practice by serving others in an approved ministerial setting. This practicum is performed at three distinct levels to obtain proficiency in individual, group and extended experiences gained in different settings. It introduces the student to new and challenging forms of ministry, broadens one’s vision of the needs of God’s people, and fosters the development of skills needed for ministry in the Church. The experience differs from other experiences of ministry because it is focused on a set of goals specified in a Work Learning Contract that outlines a personal and formational focus of the ministry.
Supervised ministry is performed during the fall, spring and summer semesters, depending on the nature of the supervised ministry. A specified number of hours is required for the actual ministry with the remaining time set aside for the theological reflection seminar, preparation, travel and supervision. Students meet weekly with an experienced supervisor to reflect on the ministry experience and participate in a weekly theological reflection seminar that intensifies the reflection on the ministry experience. An evaluation process keeps the student honest and aware of the progress being made. The process for selecting a ministry placement for the year normally occurs in the Spring semester when the student meets with the Pastoral Studies Department Chair to discern which placement best fits their formation goals. The process is the same for students required to perform a pastoral internship. Once the ministry is finalized, students must register for supervised ministry and submit the required application to the Pastoral Studies Office.
Theological Reflection Seminars, held weekly on campus, are the heart of the supervised ministry experience under the leadership of a regular faculty member. Seminars, normally composed of 6 students, are separately organized according to Level I and Level II to accommodate participants doing supervised ministry at the particular level. Level I seminars seek to develop the skill of reflection to grow in self-knowledge and insight into how one serves the people of God. Level II seeks to develop the skill of social analysis, the ability to interpret a ministry experience in the light of our theological tradition and the capacity to put that reflection into action.
Pastoral Internships are required for students in the MDIV degree program who have completed Level I and Level II supervised ministries. The Level III internship requires effort of at least 40 hours per week for a period of 10 weeks and can be extended longer at the option of the student.
